Charlotte, NC. Two Winthrop chemistry majors were
recognized today at the annual scholarship luncheon hosted by the
Carolinas Chemical Club at Piper Glen Country Club. Matthew
Howell and Andrew LaChapell each received a $1,000 scholarship through
the generosity of the Carolinas Chemical Club, a group of sales and
purchasing professionals who market for major US chemical companies in
the Charlotte and upstate South Carolina region.
Matthew is a junior chemistry major from Clover, SC planning to pursue graduate school or a professional chemistry position in industry upon graduation from Winthrop. Andrew is currently a senior chemistry major who transferred last year to Winthrop from California State University. He is finishing a chemistry degree was also holding a position with Specialty Polymers Corporation in Chester, SC. Andrew intends to either continue working in industry or pursue graduate studies after graduation from Winthrop.
For the past five years, the Carolinas Chemical Club, has recognized Winthrop chemistry students through its demonstrated generosity. For a number of recipients, the Carolinas Chemical scholarships have enabled them to qualify for in-state tuition at Winthrop as a result of their award. Each spring, the scholarship selection committee solicits nominations from chemistry faculty on students to be considered for these awards. The committee reviews academic performance, interest in chemistry, other financial aid being received, and financial need in making its recommendations. Prior scholarship recipients are working in industry, teaching high school chemistry, or planning to attend graduate school in chemistry.
