: Does p=total carbon atoms in molecule, because in the book it says p=carbon atoms in polymethine chain. What is the polymethine chain?

p refers to the number of carbons in the conjugated part of the molecule.

These dyes are considered poymethine dyes with the 2 nitrogens separated
by a conjugated chain of carbons that can have different lengths.
