Text:  Atoms, Molecules, and Reactions, Gillespie, Eaton, Humphreys, and Robinson, 1994.

Outline:  This is the first half of General Chemistry. These topics will be discussed:
 
Atoms and Molecules
Atmosphere, Gases, and Gas Laws
Periodic Table and Chemical Bonds
Chemical Reactions and the Halogens
Stoichiometry
Electronic Structure of Atoms and Molecules
Sulfur, Phosphorus, and Chlorine: Period 3 Nonmetals
Carbon and the Hydrocarbons
Thermochemistry and Thermodynamics
Metals: Properties, Structures, and Reactions

Class Preparation: For each class I recommend that you do the following:

1. Read assigned lesson for upcoming lecture, take notes
2. Work assigned problems
3. Review previous lecture notes and chapter objectives
4. Rework previously assigned problems

Maaterials Required for Each Class: Text, Calculator, Pencil, and Paper

Graded Exercises

1. As shown on the syllabus, announced quizzes will periodically be given. Each quiz will be worth 30 points and will cover material since the last quiz + reading from that day’s lesson.

2. Four 100 point tests will be given. They are tentatively scheduled as follows:

Test 1 September 23 - Chapters 1, 2, 3
Test 2 October 16 - Chapters 4, 5
Test 3 November 13 - Chapters 6, 7, 8
Test 4 December 4 - Chapters 9, 10

3. One book report will be required and will be weighted 50 points.

4. The final exam will cover the entire course and will be worth 300 points.

Grades: (You must score better than 50% on the final exam to pass the course)

A: 88-100%
B: 76-88%
C: 66-76%
D: 56-66%

Attendance: You are expected to attend all class meetings for the full scheduled time. Attendance at recitation is strongly recommended, but not required. You will be responsible for the recitation material; unless you have an A average, it is in your interest to attend all recitations.
