Weekly Bonus for the week of January 31:

Answer the following questions regarding acidity of organic compounds. Your answers are due on Tuesday, February 2 (Groundhog Day!) at the start of class. You must draw any and all structures of the molecules and use arrows and complete sentences to prove your point. As usual, failure to completely answer the questions will result in no points awarded. As usual, there is no partial credit for Bonus Questions such as these.

Completion of these bonus questions will result in 8 bonus points

1) Which is more acidic: Phenol or malonic acid. Why?

2) Which is more acidic: EthylPropyl ether or 1-hydroxy-propionic acid? Why?

3) Which is more acidic: 2,4-dicarboxy-3 methyl-hexanoic acid or 2,4-hydroxy-5-carboxy-hexanoic acid? Why?

4) What is a surfactant? Give an example of one and highlight portions of the molecule that are mentioned in your definition.
