TIDES
Trujillo and Thurman, 10th - Be sure to
read box 9.1 (Tidal bores); omit section on tidal power and box 9.2
Objectives: students should be able to
2. describe characteristics of
semidiurnal, diurnal and mixed tides
3. discuss
the impact that tides have on rivers and inlets
Forces: gravitational and centripetal; bulges of water due to resultant forces
Equilibrium tides: water covered, no-friction earth
· Be able to describe the position of earth, moon, sun, and the resultant water bulges
· Spring vs. neap tides
Dynamic tides: real world; modified by orbits, declination, shape of basin
· Diurnal, semidiurnal, and mixed tides – be able to draw or describe characteristics
· Tides in bays with inlets: ebb and flood tidal currents, slack water
· Tidal bores
