Air-Sea Interactions

Trujillo and Thurman 10th, Chapter   Be sure to read box 6.2 (2005 Hurricane Season)

Students should be able to

  1. Discuss the influence of convection and the Coriolis effect on wind movements
  2. Draw, label or locate major wind belts and their boundaries
  3. Discuss the formation of land and sea breezes along a coastline
  4. Discuss the formation of monsoon circulation
  5. Discuss formation of and destruction by hurricanes
  6. Discuss the formation and evolution of sea ice

There are lots of details and explanations in this chapter.  Be sure to look for big ideas

GLOBAL AIR CIRCULATION: uneven heating of earth’s surface

·         CONVECTION

·         CORIOLIS EFFECT

·         WIND BELTS:

o   Know location and direction of trade winds, westerlies, polar easterlies

o   Know location of doldrums and horse latitudes

OTHER WIND SYSTEMS:

·         SEA BREEZES VS. LAND BREEZES

·         MONSOON CIRCULATION

HIGH AND LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS

·         General wind circulation in each, depending on hemisphere

·         HURRICANES

SEA ICE vs. CONTINENTAL ICE

·         Sea ice forms in the ocean and includes pancake ice, ice floes, pack ice, and polar ice

·         Continental Ice (forms on land)  is associated with glaciers and includes shelf ice and icebergs
